P.R.A.Y. - Programs Of Religious Activities with Youth "A Scout is Reverent" as, stated by the Scout law. A variety of religious emblem programs are used by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to encourage youth to learn about their faith and recognize adults who provide significant service to youth in their religion. The awards and programs are created and administered by the various religious groups. The BSA establishes which groups to recognize. The awards are medals designed by the religious groups. Additionally there is square knot that may be used on the Scout uniform. This is a universal knot (silver on purple for youth; purple on silver for adults).
Programs of Religious Activities with Youth (P.R.A.Y.) was first adopted by the Boy Scouts of America in 1926 beginning by Ad Altare Dei for Catholic Boys. The program was expanded nationally in 1939 and the BSA approved the medal for uniform wear. The first Protestant religious emblem program was established in 1943 by the Lutheran church as Pro Deo Et Patria. The BSA established a new policy in 1993. Approval by the BSA Relationships Committee is required. Religious organizations must charter a minimum of 25 units. Contact the Council office for more information. See Page 8 for the latest Recipients of the Awards.
