San
Angelo, Texas – This May, Gerardo Martinez, Senior District Executive
of the Amistad Boy Scouts of America District, will be recognized
by the National President’s Recognition Program. This exceptional
gratitude is bestowed to only 32 of the 3,800 professional BSA staff
members, once every two years.
The
Scoutreach National President’s Recognition Program, launched in
2002, honors a select few urban and rural youth-serving executives.
These honorees are selected based on their outstanding achievements
in unit and membership growth as well as a general increase of quality
units within a Southreach area. Martinez has more than exemplified
extraordinary achievement in these areas. For nearly a decade, he
has reached out to thousands of youth in a district comprised of
8 counties and 13,000 square miles.
In
2007 his district was the only in the Concho Valley region to obtain
the Centennial Quality Award, a year that marked a 9.7 percent growth
in his district’s membership. Additionally, under Martinez’s direction,
his district reached their annual financial fundraising goals in
less than 6 months! The
keys to his success have been great volunteer support and his faith.
“Every morning I get up, read the Bible and pray for strength,”
Martinez says. “This is not an easy calling. You must spend many
hours and a lot of driving. At the end of the day, though, helping
families ensure their child leads a successful life is its own reward.
I want to be sure to thank all the adult leaders that spend thousands
of hours each year making the promise of Scouting come alive for
the youth we all serve. Without them none of this would happen.”
Martinez was recognized at the BSA National Annual Meeting in San
Diego, California.
