District
Banquet
The
District Banquet held on December 11th was a great success
with over 75 in attendance. A special thanks to
Troop 340 Scouts and Freddie Medina for the flag ceremony
Great Job!! Also, thanks to the Erickson family for
the wonderful western dinner including brisket with
all the trimmings and the homemade rolls. The
key speaker was Jack Pate , publisher of the San Angelo
Standards Times who reflected on his Scouting days.
There were numerous Leader awards presented and there
are many others that need only to attend Roundtables
to finish their awards. Leaders that are striving
to accomplish knots are also working toward Quality
Unit requirements and are sure to improve the program
for our Scouts. Tammy Vercher and Shawna Blanchard
delivered an introduction to Roundtable early in the
evening and helped Leaders to understand the importance
of their attending Roundtable. Remember, Every
Scout deserves a trained and informed leader.
The
evening ended with the presentation of the District
Award of Merit to the Scoutmaster of Troop One Don Griffis,
District Committee member and Lodge Advisor Jerry White,
and former Cubmaster of Pack 5 and District member at
large Ray Butler. The Concho Valley Council is
a better place for our Scouts because of the efforts
and selfless service of these three distinguished Scouters.
Thanks again.
Venturing
If
you are looking for a new adventure try Venturing, a
coed program for youth 14-20. Kayaking, canoeing, hiking,
mountain biking, rifle and shotgun shooting, rappelling,
and many other events are available.

New District
Leadership
Welcome
John Fluth as our new District Chairman. John
is an Eagle Scout from San Angelo and is currently serving
as the minister for the Ozona Methodist Church. He
has served on several large fundraising and endowment
campaigns across the state and was on the Board for
the Three Rivers Council in Beaumont. John is excited
about the upcoming year and is looking forward to making
it the best ever we’ve ever had. Also, we would
like to welcome back Mike Bahm of Mertzon as our District
Commissioner. Mike works for TX-DOT in Big Lake.
He is a Silver Beaver recipient from the Sam Houston
Area Council where he lived before moving west. He
has been on several training teams and can train anyone
on anything thing at almost anytime. Mike has
numerous of ideas for the future of our district and
council and is glad we have our district moving in the
right direction.
Looking
Forward to 2004
There
is a lot of work to do in 2004. Our district needs to
see an increase in membership. Venturing is the biggest
opportunity for growth in our district. Venture Crews
are very easy to start with churches that have large
youth groups. We can offer a lot of program and opportunities
to youth groups. If your church has a large youth group
that could use some extra program (and they all do)
then let Mike know and he can start working with the
pastor. Also Linda Conner and John Fluth are working
on getting some more High Adventure opportunities together
for our older youth. Linda is working on a long backpacking
trip in New Mexico or Colorado and hopes we can have
a trip put together for summer 2004. John is working
on a ski trip to Breckenridge we hope to offer it in
the spring of 2005. If you can help these two
please contact Mike Mitchell. The other areas that the
district needs to see growth in are Friends of Scouting
and District-level volunteers. Volunteers are needed
in every area of District operation—Unit Commissioners
to help units thrive, Training personnel to assist new
leaders and to make their positions easier, Activity
chairmen to head up District activities like Camporees
or Cub Fun Days. If you know anyone who you think could
fill one of these positions, please call or e-mail Mike
Mitchell.
