CHANGES IN STORE FOR MOM ‘N ME 2004

After many questions about a Council Family Camp, it has been decided to change the second Mom’N Me weekend to a full Council Family Camp.  What does this mean?  First of all the first scheduled weekend for Mom ‘N Me (May 1-2) will be as always—Moms and Cubs come out for the weekend and camp, have fun and have all meals provided for $18 per person.

The second weekend (May 8-9) is where the changes take place.  This weekend can be for a Cub and his mom, or dad or for the whole family! Little brothers, big sisters or vice-a-versa, everyone’s welcome! And there is another twist. If the family would like meals provided, it will cost the same $18, which also includes all program features. If the family would like to provide their own meals, this will be allowed.  The cost would then be $5 for each Cub Scout and $1 for each unregistered person (to cover  accident insurance).  Cooking will be permitted in the campsites. This is a way to make sure that more people can afford to attend this fun event.

We will also be trying something else new at this year’s Mom ‘N Me / Family Camp. Those who pre-register will receive a special armband at check-in.  They will get their patch, etc. at check-in, first seating at all meals and a special pass line for program areas.  Those who chose not to pre-register will get their patches, etc. at check-out ( depending on quantities, some may have to be ordered after) and will have the regular place in lines for meals and events. This is an experiment to encourage pre-registration and to make it easier on event coordinators to forecast attendance.

The theme for this year’s camps will be Space A Cub Scout Frontier. Cubs will see stars up close, learn about space, have the option of building their own Space Derby racer and more. Space Shuttle Sol Mayer will be the location for this liftoff into the great unknown.  All Cub astronauts and their rocket commanders will experience an out of this world adventure.  The craft center will be the place to design and build your own space derby rocket and then you can test it out on our very own rocket launch facility.  Astronauts must undergo very physical training to qualify for flight status so spend some time at our moon base obstacle training pad to help develop your muscles to prepare for the hardships of space travel.

Bring your spacesuits to camp so we can add the necessary components for your launch and moon walk. Astronauts train in water to prepare for the weightlessness of space, so get ready to train at our aquatics center to prepare yourself.  There may be hostile life forms on the planet so make sure to attend the field sports training facility to qualify for laser (BB-guns) and particle emitter (Archery) practice.  Remember, the Scout you save may be you!!!

Remember—the first weekend will be $18 per person and the second weekend will be the same if you want all meals provided, if not the cost will be $5 for each Cub Scout and $1 for every unregistered person.  T-shirts are available for only $10 but you need to prepay by April 15th.  Extra t-shirts may not be available.  You can register as a Pack or as an individual but please pre-register before April 15th to ensure your place on our Rocket. Spaces are limited so make your reservation today.  If you have any questions, or if you need more information, contact the Council Office at (325) 655-7107 or toll free at 1-800-321-7107.

Philmont Volunteer Leader Training

Philmont is one of the most famous Scout Ranches in existence.  Many boys have gone on treks there and had a great time.  Philmont also offers a top notch training center.  The best part about the training center is that while the adults are in training conferences their children can attend planned activities, so the whole family can have fun. The Philmont training course outline lists the trainings that Philmont offers by the month they are offered in.  Each month has a theme associated with a specific area in Scouting. Your month might be just around the corner.  Please hurry though, reservations and payments need to made through the Council Office.  For more information please check out the Philmont Training Centers website:

Brochures and Leader’s Guides are available at the Council Office for every event listed in this newsletter.
