PEACE LIGHT 2011

On Saturday 12/10/11 the residents of Fort Stockton and surrounding communities have the opportunity to bring home a 1000 year old flame from the site of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. A flame is one of those rare items that is not diminished when you share it, in fact it grows brighter every time it is shared. Saturday 12/10/11 from 8:00 – 9:00 AM the Peace Light will be available at Nunez Park, corner of Main Street and 1st here in Ft. Stockton. The best way to carry the Peace Light flame is in a lantern or lamp fueled by liquid paraffin, often called lamp oil. An enclosed candle will also work, but sometimes the wax splashes on the wick when you go around a corner putting itself out. It is best if your lantern or candle is transported in a bucket to contain emergencies and protect it from the wind. Your window should be open a crack to let in fresh air. More information is available at http://peacelight.org.

There is a Grotto under the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem which is believed to be the site of Jesus’ birth. Oil lamps have been continuously lit there for over a thousand years. For the last 22 years a child from Austria is chosen to fetch the Peace Light from one of these lamps. The flame is used to light two blast proof miners lamps, originally designed to be used in coal mines. The lit lamps are carried aboard an Austrian Airlines jet to Vienna.

Scouts and other interested people gather in Vienna to light their lamps from the Peace Light flame the miners lamps carried from Bethlehem. They in turn pass the Peace Light flame from lamp to lamp, spreading it across Europe as far north as the northern edge of Norway, and as far east as Moscow.

Austrian Airlines has been bringing their miners lamps carrying the Peace Light flame to New York since 2004. Scouts meet the Peace Light at JFK airport, and light their lamps from the miners lamps. Spreading the Peace Light across the North American continent. On Saturday 12/10 you have the opportunity to join in this international effort. Come to Nunez Park and receive the Peace Light. Take it home and share it with family and friends. Encourage them to pass on the Peace Light as well. The more it is shared the brighter it will becomes.

If you want to hold the Peace Light for later use blow out the pilot light on an old style water heater or fire place and relight it with the Peace Light flame. Don’t blow it out until you know how to relight it. Consult a professional if you are unsure how to do this.
